With their thick, leathery skin and juicy segments, oranges are members of the citrus family. And if you remember from our story about citrus, these fruits are, in a strictly botanical sense, actually berries. (1)
If you’re wondering what came first, the fruit or the colour, then let us enlighten you. The word orange comes from the Sanskrit name of the tree, and it entered European languages through the Persian, popping up in English in the 14th century. It wasn’t until the early 16th century that people started using the word to refer to the colour orange. (1)
Harvesting oranges
Oranges grow on trees and are usually harvested by hand to ensure that they aren’t bruised during picking. Did you know that depending on its size and age, an orange tree can produce between 100 and 200 kilograms of oranges a year? (3)
There are 400 different cultivars, all with different coloured fruit and peel. (4)
Because oranges stop ripening once they’ve been picked, timing the harvest is an exact science. Depending on the variety, oranges are mainly picked between November and March. (5)
Sweet companion
In the chilly months, oranges and their fruity, sweet flavour remind us of warm summer days. But that’s not their only benefit in winter: containing more than 50mg of vitamin C per 100g (6), oranges surely are a sweet companion, acting as a tasty first line of defence against all the cold days of the year that lurk during the winter months.
